Baking Bread

I will be the first to admit that I rarely spend time in the kitchen, unless I am washing dishes. My hubby is an awesome cook and bakes the best cakes, so I usually let him handle our meals. Plus, I’m awful at following directions. Think crockpot recipes are fool-proof? I’ve somehow managed to burn them…at least twice.

But when it comes to fresh french bread, I am the master. I made my first batch a couple of years ago, and while I don’t do it as often as I would like, there are definitely days when I crave that yeasty scent. Yesterday morning was one of them. It’s a long process but worth it. And kneading dough is incredibly therapeutic. So if you are having a bad day, or just want your kitchen to smell amazing, start baking.

I would share my recipe, but it’s a secret that was passed down from my French grandmother. Okay, that’s a lie. I found it in a $5 book I purchased at Ollie’s. The book is full of a ton of fancy recipes that take way more time than I have, but it’s fun to dream. If I had nothing better to do, I wouldn’t mind waking up early every morning and baking several loaves of bread. And then give them away to everyone I love.

Here is the basic recipe. Combine flour, water, yeast, and salt; mix and wait; knead and wait some more; flip over; more waiting; roll dough into baguette shapes; then wait (did I mention this is an all day process); heat up the oven; place dough in oven; burn your finger in the process; attempt to clean the thin layer of flour off of the entire kitchen; once the bread is golden brown, take them out of the oven; try not to eat them all in one sitting and enjoy!

While this bread is excellent on it’s own, we decided to fancy it up. With hot dogs. I know, it doesn’t sound gourmet, but trust me, a little gouda and this meal is heaven. My husband thinks this meal is so good, he usually kisses me a bunch afterwards. So I think we’ll keep making it :).

Don’t worry, we included some vegetables, too.
